Welcome to First Unitarian Universalist Church!

First Unitarian Universalist Church is a welcoming religious community of diverse individuals. We strive to be a beacon of acceptance and offer a haven of peace and love for all who enter our doors.

As a spiritual community, we value reason in matters of faith, freedom in religion, lifelong spiritual growth, and engagement in social justice. We live our faith through acts of justice, love, and compassion, believing the world can be transformed by our care.

Our community has been a liberal religious presence in downtown Reading, PA, since 1832. We welcome you to join us.

Worship Services

Sunday services begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a fellowship hour. Children and youth participate in the first 15 minutes, and then are excused to religious education classes. Childcare is available for infants and toddlers.

Sept. 5 The Artful Life
Joanna Groebel

The great mime artist Samuel Avital once said that every person is a special kind of artist, rather than the common belief that artists are special kind of people. In essence, we are all designers and our life is the creation. Deep creativity is something we each own and can claim for ourselves in our own idiosyncratic way. What does the artful life look like to you? What gets in your way of living such a life? An experiential workshop detailed in the body of the newsletter will follow the service.

Sept. 12 Gather the Spirit
Rev. Sandra Fees, Elizabeth Kaufmann, DRE, and Dan Matz, Music Director, and First UU Choir

This Sunday marks our annual intergenerational ingathering as a congregation. We’ll share stories and music about water, reflecting on its symbolism and necessity for our existence. Everyone is invited to bring a small amount of water, representing their own spiritual and physical journeys this summer, to join together in our Unitarian Universalist water communion.

Sept. 19 Lifting the Burden
Rev. Sandra Fees and Dan Matz, Music Director

In honor of Yom Kippur, we will reflect on the ways we can make amends and lift the burden of injuries. The service will include a child dedication ceremony. This Sunday is the start of Religious Education classes.

Sept. 26 Religious Humanism for One World
Rev. Sandra Fees, David Alcorn, Member, and Susan Pena, Pianist

This morning, we explore the religious humanism of Unitarian Universalist Rev. Kenneth Patton, who has had a significant impact on UU worship and theology. This is the annual auction sermon, and the topic was selected by the winning bidder, David Alcorn.
