UU Books

The Aug. 8 book discussion, beginning at 9am, will be on How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings From a Leading Neuroscientist by Andrew Newberg and Mark Waldman. In this provocative book, two neuroscientists at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Spirituality and the Mind that meditation, prayer and other spiritual practices reduce stress and permanently strengthen neural functioning in specific parts of the brain that lower anxiety and depression. This increases neuroplasticity, enhancing social awareness and empathy, and improves cognitive functioning.

On Sept. 12 the book discussion group will revisit Einstein’s God: Conversations About Science and the Human Spirit by Krista Tippett. Our September discussion will focus on three chapters of this book, previously discussed at our June group: “The Spirit as an Emergent Life Force: the Biology of the Spirit” with Sherwin Nuland (chapter 2); “Creation as an Unfolding Reality: Evolution and Wonder” with James Moore (chapter 4); and “On the Complementary Nature of Science and Religion: Quarks and Creation” with John Polkinghorne (chapter 10).

Each chapter, drawn from American Public Media’s Peabody Award winning program Speaking of Faith, explores the nexus of science and spirituality in fascinating interviews that make connections between the two realms and show that even those most wedded to hard truths find spiritual enlightenment in the life of experiment and, in turn, raise questions that are richly, theologically evocative.

Those unfamiliar with Einstein’s God may also want to read the introduction to the book, for background.

Minister’s Discretionary Fund in Need of Funding

The Minister’s Discretionary Fund has been assisting individuals with mortgage payments, rent, and utility bills this winter. Most of those asking for assistance are receiving between $250 and $500. The fund balance, as of January 15, was $474, which is sufficient to help one or possibly two families. The fund is supported by contributions from members and friends and an annual special plate collection.
