Religious Education Calendar of Events

Dear Friends,

August Religious Education Adventures

In the past few years, we have explored world cultures, local food, dance/movement, and the unseen web of life during our August RE adventures. This year, our three August multi-age sessions will be focused on the theme of music.

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” said Berthold Auerbach. And who among us has not been swept away by the wonderful feeling of community as we sing Spirit of Life, or felt a sense of peace listening to Dan’s lovely improvised piano preludes or teared up during a favorite hymn or song. See the Calendar of Events below for a full description of our three-week musical exploration.

Teen Programming for 2010/2011: Teachers/Advisors Wanted!

With Barry taking a step back from the teen group this year, we are in need of adults willing to serve as advisors and teachers for the group. The curriculum planned for this year is called Families and it is part of the UUA’s new Tapestry of Faith program. The curriculum gives the participants the chance to examine their ideas about families and what makes a family work, learn basic photography skills, and create a photo documentary project of their families and our church community. In addition to teachers, we are in need of people with a photography background to support the teens in the creation of the photo documentary project.

In other teen news, Kimberly McGarvey and Doug Wray are becoming trained OWL facilitators. OWL---Our Whole Lives—is a comprehensive sexuality education program developed by the UUA and the United Church of Christ. OWL classes are offered outside of regular Sunday morning classes.

In order to start planning for these two programs, we will be having a meeting for all families with students in grade 7 and above on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 12 noon to discuss the OWL program and the photography curriculum. Please RSVP to Elizabeth.

Friday, Aug.13: Family Morning Out, 9:30 am (Gerber Room)
This gathering of kids and moms is usually for parents of babies and toddlers but with summer vacation on, feel free to come if you have school-aged children as well. Enjoy a glass of iced tea, a snack, conversation and playtime.

Sunday, Aug. 15: Creative Expression with Joanna Groebel
Joanna will work with children and youth from kindergarten to high school to help awaken creativity through exploration of different art media while listening to music. A separate activity will be held for preschool children ages 3 & 4

Sunday, Aug. 15: Teen Programming Planning Meeting, 12 noon
(Chalice House 1st Floor Meeting Room)

Sunday, Aug. 22: Musical Instrument Show and Tell
Does anyone in your family plan an instrument? If so, please bring it to church for a musical version of “show-and-tell.” We’ll talk about our instruments and play some tunes—all ability levels welcome! We will also have some special guests to teach us a little bit about the recorder and discuss the possibility of having a recorder group at church.

Aug. 29: Drum Circle with Michael Clipman
If you have never been to one of Michael’s drum circles, you are in for a special treat! If you have a drum of your own, please feel free to bring it along, but Michael will provide plenty of instruments for everyone. We will learn some basic drumming skills and have fun making lots of (loud) music together!
