The Mind of the Minister

Joy in the Ordinary

As the weather warms up, the signs of spring are all around. Settling into our new home, Jess and I have fallen upon the new joy of discovering what the previous owners had planted around the house. Every day, new patches of hyacinth and daffodils emerge from the mulch around the house, a riot of purples and yellows. Our neighbor’s tree, which arches over our backyard has burst into white flowers, and now others in the neighborhood have followed suit.

Just For Fun!

Joy is all around us.  Sometimes we just have to search it out.

How many times have you heard the saying “Just for fun!”?

These “just for fun” moments can bring us so much joy.

This month how will you practice joy?

This month will you dismiss the opportunity for joy?

Meditation Group Starting Soon

Meditation offers a way to approach life with greater kindness, confidence, and curiosity in these challenging times. This group is open to anyone interested in meditation, whether you’re a beginner looking for a gentle introduction or a seasoned practitioner seeking to deepen and stabilize your practice.

Our gatherings will include guided meditation, discussion, and practical tools to bring mindfulness into daily life. Together, we’ll explore presence, self-awareness, and how meditation can transform our relationships—with ourselves, our families, our community, and the world. As we build this group within the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the larger Reading community, we invite you to be part of the journey.

Tentative dates are April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, May 13, 20, 27 and June 10. Please check the church website for any changes.

Please arrive at UU Berks between 6:30 and 7 pm for some tea and snacks.  Sitting will begin at 7 pm, and guided meditation will be offered. After sitting, we will have a discussion topic or brief talk and plan to finish between 8 and 8:30 pm.

Dr. Ron and Helen S. drop In UUBerks

If you have been a member for more than a dozen years, you probably recall Dr. Ron S.and his wife Helen.  They were long-time members and supporters of UU Berks until that time when they retired to South Carolina.  Ron was board president for a number of years.  He was board president for part of my first stint on the board of directors between 2008 and 2014, just prior to Joe Plageman’s term as board president.  And we have Ron to thank for inviting Mona M. to attend our church.  He left a legacy in many ways.

Ron and Helen left the church before the Sanctuary renovation.  They marveled at our colorful ceiling and Dave W. fabulously created chalice that makes our space unique.  They did say the Gerber Room looks the same, though. ?.    And for those of you who know Ron and Helen, it appears time has stood still for them.  They looked fantastic and were feeling great.

Ron made an impression on me in my early years at  .  I saw in him a gifted, caring leader who approached everything with calm, poise, and air-tight logic.  It was a rare sight to find Ron without a smile on his face.  Seeing him and Helen on Sunday sure put a smile on my face.

Blessed we are.
